Web Design HTML Tag: Comment

Located anywhere in a web document, the comment tag is primarily for coding and development purposes. True to its name, a comment tag allows authors to place text within their code that will be ignored by browsers and never shown to visitors. There are number of reasons to include comments; Authors often provide instructions to manipulate or customize code or in order to take credit for their work. Commenting is also a practical tool to help browsers process, or not process, scripts or pieces of code. Browsers with javascript disabled, for instance can read comments to prevent it from (improperly) rendering elements it can’t understand.

Popular in the open-source community, comment tags let any designer or developer reuse code from another author and easily tailor it to the project at hand.

Web Design HTML Tag: H2

After the first header tag, H1, comes another important header tag; the H2. Unlike the H1, the H2 should be used multiple times on a page (sometimes dozens). If you have a look at the source code for blogs, you’ll notice that the post titles are frequently wrapped in an H2 tag. Think of the H2 as chapter titles compared to the H1: the title of the book itself. They should contain secondary keywords and keyphrases that both stem from your primary keywords and help describe your page and its content. H2 tags are often used as anchor text when linking to articles, posts, pages or subcategories. Even though they don’t hold as much value as H1 tags in terms of ranking, H2 tags are invaluable to search engine indexing by providing a logical site structure or architecture for robots to follow and record. Match H2′s from your homepage (or main category) to H1′s on the pages (or subcategories) they link to. Be smart and stay consistent; too many keyword variations can result in spreading yourself too thin. Focus is crucial.

Web Design HTML Tag: Title

The title tag could be your most effective in terms of SEO and visitor conversion. The title appears in several locations; the window title bar, the default bookmark title and, most importantly, the title of your search engine listing. A superior title tag successfully and succinctly combines the three following elements, thereby optimizing its effectiveness:

  1. Primary Keyword or Keyphrase
  2. Attention Grabber
  3. Maximum Length of 70 Characters

First, you should have your primary keywords unless your brand is so strong your site can rank without it. Second, construct concise marketing copy (2-3 words, ideally) that makes users want to click your site over the others. Last, never forget to respect recommended search engine title lengths in order to avoid the dreaded ellipsis (…). If you are able to incorporate a key benefit into your title, you’ll have a leg up on the competition providing you deliver consistent messaging and an efficacious marketing funnel.

Striking a optimal balance between keyword-rich and effective advertising copy is essential to maximizing clicks and traffic. The title tag is one worth putting a lot of time into.
